I am deeply touched by the quote of the month by James Hillman posted on this board. The synchronicity of its timeliness is breath-taking as Pacifica moves forward in its drive for equality, diversity, and social justice.
"QUOTE OF THE MONTH
"The culture is going into a psychological depression. We are concerned about our place in the world, about being competitive: Will my children have as much as I have? Will I ever own my own home? How can I pay for a new car? Are immigrants taking away my white world? "
-James Hillman"
With such clarity, James Hillman appears to be provocatively opening a window of dialogue through his quote, highlighting privilege and oppression as they impact the psychological well being of our world. In a few words, he appears to address the fears of those with the most privilege in a way that is so often difficult to express in words: What will I lose if I fight for equality? What if equality becomes a reality? How will it impact me? How will it impact future generations? His quote brings out the terror of the heart so clearly and succinctly "IT IS MINE!"
With a sentence he captures the impact that such unrealistic fears are having on our current societal well-being and its dive into a depressive state. One might propose that this is often the impact of fear: a shutting down of self, a grasping hold tightly of what we have in a process of isolating ourselves from the loving and creative spirit that arises in our interactions with others as we share what 'is ours' with all.
I am inspired by his ability to acknowledge the necessity of exploring the use of privilege to reverse the direction of our culture from continuing its path of "going into a psychological depression."
It is also so very timely with his upcoming visit to Pacifica Graduate Institute. He will be speaking with our students in their Psychopathology course which I have the pleasure of teaching. I am deeply interested in conversing with him about this quote and would respectfully like to ask for its original source so that I might explore it in its full context prior to our meeting. Thank you so much for the inspiring piece.

No human relation gives one possession in another...every two souls are absolutely different. In friendship and in love, the two side by side raise hands together to find what one cannot reach alone.
